THE FU FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP AT FIU

$2000 in travel grants to Asia provided annually for students of the Asian Studies Institute Florida International University, Miami, Florida.

2008 Scholarship Recipients

Doria Bareket, an Asian Studies Major, will be spending a semester at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan.

Gregg Burrow, a Japanese Studies Certificate student, traveled to Hiroshima for a seminar on the atomic bombing.

Stephanie Cua and Yakelin Wong are both in the Japanese Studies Certificate program and will be spending a semester at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan.

Karyna Do Monte is traveling to India for studies of religion and culture in pursuit of the Graduate Asian Studies Certificate.

Boris Escalona, also an Asian Studies Major, will be attending the Ritsumeikan University program in summer 2008.



2007 Scholarship Recipients

Jacob Dobbs is traveling to China for studies of language and culture in pursuit of the Chinese Studies Certificate.

Jennifer Garcia, an Asian Studies major, participated in the 2007 summer intensive language program in Kyoto.

Marisely Rojas is pursuing a Japanese Studies Certificate and attended the Ritsumeikan University program in summer 2007.

Jan Solomon conducted research in South Asia leading to her doctoral degree in International Relations.

Antonio Vega, an Asian Studies major, spent the Fall semester abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan.




2006 Scholarship Recipients

Brian Hunting, Teresa Montgomery, and David Shaw - 2006 Summer Intensive Language Program at Ritsumeikan University.
Brian is seeking a minor in Asian Studies and a Japanese Certificate. Teresa is pursuing a certificate in Asian Studies and is very active in the conjunction with IAS. David is an Asian Studies major and has been pursuing Japanese studies for the past two years.

Felix Maldonado studied at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. He is pursuing a double major in Asian Studies and Computer Engineering, and plans to incorporate research in Japan with his graduate studies.

Zhang Xiu Hui, Treasurer of the International Business Honor Society, went to Thailand in the spring semester to take part in the 2006 International Business Honor Program



2005 Scholarship Recipients

Yanery Andreu - (Semester in Japan)
Yanery, an Asian Studies major, has been studying Japanese extensively and will spend the Fall 2005 semester studying at Kansai Gaidai University near Kyoto and Osaka on a student semester exchange program.

Jonathan Cameron - (Summer in China)
Jonathan will spend two weeks this summer in China as part of Professor Chang's "Art and Education" trip.

Christopher Pena - (Summer in Japan)
Christopher has won an essay contest from Aichi Prefectural University's International Symposium in Partnership with EXPO 2005 Aichi, Japan "Symbiosis: Harmonious Coexistence and Our Challenge of Creating a New Age in the 21st Century," and as part of this award will attend a two-week conference at Aichi Prefectural University over the summer.

Kathy Stone - (Summer in India)
Kathy, an Environmental Studies MA student who is also completing a graduate certificate in Asian Studies, will be doing her thesis research in Southern India over the summer. She will be investigating the socio-economic challenges of restoring mangrove forests in commercial
aquacultures in the area.


2004 Scholarship Recipients

Jelena Avramovic - (Summer in China)
Jelena, an Asian Studies certificate student, is traveling on a special trip this summer sponsored by International Mission on Diplomacy that will enhance her studies of global political economy.

Sandy Avila - (Summer in Thailand)
Sandy, a graduate student in Religious Studies, as well as an Asian Studies graduate certificate student, will be working on a research project this summer in Thailand that combines her interest in the study of religious ritual and performing arts, especially dance.

Alan Flaten - (Summer in Japan)

Natali Garcia-Diaz - (Semester in Japan)
Natali, an Asian Studies B.A. student who is also majoring in Sociology, will be spending a semester at Kansai Gaidai University during Fall 2004.

2003 Scholarship Recipients

Isidro de Prat - (Japan)
Isidro will be spending a year on a student exchange program at KandaUniversity of International Studies, which is just outside of Tokyo. FIU has had an exchange program with Kanda for a couple of years, but Isidrois the first FIU student to participate. He is also receiving a scholarship from Kanda University and will be completing the Asian Studies B.A. program here.

Aviva Menashe - (Japan)
Aviva, another Asian Studies B.A. student who also majors in International Relations, will be spending a year at Kansai International University outsideof Kobe.

Diana Ter-Ghazaryan - (Kyrgyztan)
Diana is a graduate student in Environmental Studies who is working on a research project this summer in Central Asia. She will completethe graduate certificate in Transitional and Regional Studies with a concentrationon Asia.

Bryna Griffin - (Thailand)
Bryna is also a graduate student in Environmental Studies who will be working on a research project in Southeast Asia this summer.
